How You Can Help During Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Every January, Human Trafficking Prevention Month serves as a crucial time to shine a light on the hidden crime of human trafficking, educate the public, and inspire action. By raising awareness, equipping individuals with the tools to identify and respond to trafficking situations, and supporting survivors, we can work together to build stronger, safer communities free from exploitation.

At the New Mexico Dream Center, we are committed to supporting survivors and empowering communities to prevent trafficking. Together, we can make a difference.

Understanding Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery involving the use of force, fraud, or coercion to exploit individuals for labor or commercial sex. It happens in cities and towns across the world and impacts people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. (However, certain populations are inherently more vulnerable.)

Did You Know? Many trafficking situations are identified by people who know the person being exploited. Recognizing the signs is a powerful way to help. The National Human Trafficking Hotline (1-888-373-7888) provides free, confidential help 24/7. If you suspect someone is being trafficked, don’t hesitate to call. You can also reach someone locally at 505-504-1301.

How You Can Help End Trafficking

1. Learn the Signs of Trafficking

Human trafficking often happens in plain sight. Key indicators include:

  • Someone showing signs of physical abuse, fear, or anxiety.

  • Individuals unable to speak freely or isolated from friends and family.

  • Workers living in poor conditions, unable to leave their jobs, or not receiving fair pay.

Visit the National Human Trafficking Hotline website to learn more about specific situations that should raise concern. Your awareness could save a life.

2. Educate Yourself and Others

Many individuals who have experienced human trafficking come into contact with healthcare and social service providers during and after their exploitation. The SOAR Online training program offers free, on-demand courses tailored to specific professional fields, such as:

  • Social Workers

  • Teachers and School-Based Professionals

  • Healthcare Providers

Explore these career-specific resources here.

In addition, the New Mexico Dream Center provides local, in-person awareness education to youth groups, businesses, schools, and other organizations. We know that awareness is the first step to combatting human trafficking. Learn more and schedule a training here.

3. Think Before You Buy

Human trafficking is a supply and demand issue. The higher the demand, the more the supplier will supply. Whether it be for sex or labor, suppliers (traffickers) will find a way to provide the desired commodity for the buyers.

Many goods we use every day may be linked to forced or child labor. To help combat labor exploitation:

  • Research companies’ sourcing practices.

  • Use tools like the Responsible Sourcing Tool to make informed purchasing decisions.

  • Support businesses committed to ethical labor practices.

  • Never pay for sex or view pornography.
